how is a chromebook different from a laptop?
Chromebooks are the Google version of a laptop. Chromebooks are designed to do cloud computing. Because they are cloud computing devices (the devices of the future), they are slightly different than a typical laptop. Laptops live in the world of software. Anytime you want to do something on a laptop, you need to load software to do it. And, you usually need to buy the next version of that software.
Cloud computing puts the "software" on the web. Instead of loading software on your computer, you visit a portal on the internet to do your task (word processing, video editing, saving files...) Google Chromebooks are special in that you have no idea you are in a cloud computing environment. It seamlessly connects you to the Google suite of apps that you need just by clicking on icons.
There are other advantages to the Chromebook as well. One is that your work is not stuck on the Chromebook like it would be on a laptop. With software, your work is stuck in the software on one device. With the Chromebook your work is anywhere you can get an internet connection and log in. Another is the price, Chromebooks are typically between $250-$300. Chromebooks also boot up within seconds and don't get viruses or malware.

Now, we are going to log onto a Chromebook and see where all of our files are stored and saved.
Please watch the video below and then get a Chromebook to log into. Once you have logged in, explore and experiment with any of the tools we have learned today.
First and formost, teachers will need to change their passwords before they are allowed to log onto a Chromebook. (Students do not need to do this.) You can do this through the "Options" in your e-mail.
